Simple Living in a Time of Trouble

Camping teaches us that we can live with very little of what we consider essential for everyday living. Compared to third world countries most of what we own is what we want not what we need.

To prepare for coming events we should retain only those items that will enable us live a basic self-sufficient lifestyle, the ability to earn, grow, build and maintain with a minimum of external dependency. If we are serious about our preparation, we should be gradually reorganising our lives so that we have the tools, knowledge and resources that will better allow us to provide for ourselves and our families as God opens the way for us to move to a place where this lifestyle is possible.

This encompasses every aspect of our basic needs, equipment for food production, food preparation, food preserving, tools and equipment for gardening tools, tools for building and maintenance, tools and equipment for energy production and income earning. We don’t have to buy everything at the hardware store but there are basic essentials we should have, particularly hand tools which can used without any need for electric power or fuel.

One cheap way to gather hand tools is at seasonal sales, garage sales, markets and auctions. Always look for brands that have a reputation of being high quality and long lasting. Be prepared to pay more for a quality product because it will not only last longer but be a pleasure to use. This is very important when it comes to any tool that has an edge that cuts, be it soil, vegetation, wood or steel. The quality of a tools steel and hardening and tempering will determine how quickly it will wear, how strong it is under heavy loads and how long it will stay sharp. A cheap tool that does not work is expensive and frustrating. Better to have one quality knife that stays sharp and cuts well than six that blunt quickly and will not cut.
